A Brief History

The school was founded in 1916 in East Gate, Taipei as "臺灣佛教中學林" for the purpose of promoting Buddhism during the time of Japanese colonialism when most Taiwanese were barred from getting a high school education.

Although the school was considered the pioneer of private high schools at that time, it was a very small establishment with monks as teachers and monks-to-be as students. Furthermore, most of the school’s funds were donated by Buddhists and enthusiastic educators.

The school name was changed to "私立曹洞宗臺灣中學林" in November, 1922. In the same year, it was ordered to merge with "私立臨濟宗鎮南中學林" and "私立國學院" in the next year. Thus, the school became bigger and bigger in scale.

In March of 1935, the school’s name was changed to "私立臺北中學", and it began to evolve from a Buddhist school into an ordinary high school. In April of 1938, due to its increased scale, the school was moved to Shilin, and it changed its study period from three years to five years. The school also set up its foundation in September,1938 and changed its name to "私立臺北中學校" . The school now had the same qualifications as official schools. In 1944, it set up the girl’s department, "修德實踐女學校" , at the original East Gate location and became a high school for both sexes.

The school officially changed its name to "臺北市私立泰北中學" in 1940 based on the Chinese expression---"泰山北斗". In August 1968, the school stopped accepting junior high school students because the government expanded compulsory education to grade 9. In the same year, the school established a business department and set up a night department in order to meet social demands. It was then ordered to change its name to its current name, "臺北市私立泰北高級中學" in April ,1972.

The School Badge

Our school badge traces its roots all the way back to schools under "曹洞宗" . Hence, our badge is an integral part of Taiwan's history. Our school badge is in the shape of a circle which means "圜" in Chinese. The Chinese character "圜" represents flawless perfection and success just like the Buddhist’s expression of "圓妙" and "圓融".

The patterns on both sides of the badge represent thin small bamboos and flowers of the Chinese parasol tree symbolizing thespirit of our school.

Therefore, the students in our school must understand the meaning of our badge and work toward obtaining the unique qualities of the Chinese parasol tree.
